Here's a step by step visual aide to help you turn a VW Solar Panel that can be bought from ebay and turn it in to a universal charger to keep your cars battery from going dead when sitting for periods of time, or if your like me, too many car adapters charging your stuff when I'm away and the car is off. The solar panel is made by ICP, a world renowned solar panel maker. The nice thing about this VW solar panel costs cheap (about + another for additional supplies), but if purcahsed from ICP's web site would cost about -5. I hope this helps, I have three of these solar panels and use them on our families cars... Note when using in your car, make sure the cigarette adapter has power to it when the car is off and the key is not in the ignition. Sometimes referred to as a power supply socket, the plug must be attached to the battery, and not disconnected when the car/vehicle is off. If you don't have such an option or don't want to wire one in or use you only power supply for this, you can hard wire the solar pannel into the fuse box, and or directly to the battery. BUT, there must be sometype of switch/switching mechanism to disconnect the solar panel feed once the car starts and remains running, otherwise you risk damaging/ruining the solar panel and it's parts... Good luck....

NOCO iMob solar battery chargers convert light energy from the sun into 12 volt DC electricity, which is then transported to the rechargeable batteries through the lead wire and connector. The thin film amorphous technology of iMob's panel allows the absorption of a wider spectrum of natural light and therefore works in cloudy weather conditions. This technology also enables the solar panel to handle the intense heat of the summer and the power loss due to rising temperatures. Works in all weather conditions and is waterproof, shock and rust resistant. Has reverse charge protection and overcharge protection. Box includes a charger, battery clamp connector, eyelet terminal connector and a 12 volt cigarette connector. Has a 5 year limited warranty.

Times are hard... cant be wasting mon ey on a fancy battery charger so a friend gave me a book by George Wiseman from Eagle Research. The circuit consists of nothing more than a large capacitor and a rectifier. It would appear to be dangerous if you know what stupid people could do with it ;) But it charges anything from 1x 100ah 12v battery to my truck cells (48x 2v 500ah) wired at 96volts. It seems quite fast considering it only has a 3amp fuse on the mains... I only wanted a trickle charger for the 24000ah on the truck to keep them happy during winter.

Marine Battery Trickle Charger

It is important to use a marine battery trickle charger to maintain the charge on a boat's battery when the boat is not going to be used for extended periods.

Overcharging is the number one cause of battery failure so it is important to buy a good battery charger, you get what you pay for, and trying to save money in short run will often cost in the long. With a single stage charger over time you can literally cook your batteries.

We recommend a high frequency 3 stage charger for most applications. This means that the system goes through 3 stages, bulk charge, top off, and maintains your batteries no matter the battery composition. The industry calls this a bulk, float, absorption charge or 3 stage charger.

The Battery Tender works well, but we also really like the Xantrex and C-Tek models.

When your boat is going to be in storage for an extended period, say winter storage, a small charger that works steadily will be more efficient on cost and power consumption. The C-Tek.8 amp charger is available online. It can be to tender hundreds of amp hours of batteries. It can take weeks to fully charge a battery. For a bigger marine battery trickle charger the Xantrex 40 amp charger will charge batteries up quickly.

A two stage charger is necessary to charge while using the battery. The Xantrex multiple stage, multiple battery bank charger is excellent for this purpose. For high amp loads a charger with a transformer is required.

Many trickle chargers can charge 6 volt and 12 volt batteries. It's important to make sure you have selected the correct charge setting. Battery trickle chargers can be left connected to the battery all the time. Periodically check on the battery, when checking feel if it is unusually warm, this is a sign it may be damaged or shorted. If this happens, immediately disconnect the charger and get it tested by an expert.

Take care not to make any sparks around a charging battery. While charging hydrogen gas is created which is highly explosive and in combination with the acid that is present can be a deadly combination.
